In a representative survey commissioned by the consumer portal check24, 21 percent of respondents said 5G would be a decisive purchase criterion for their next smartphone or mobile communications contract. 60 percent said that 5G was not a decisive purchase criterion, 19 percent were undecided.
On the one hand, 5G mobile communications technology enables significantly higher transmission rates. Data is also made available more quickly than with the current LTE network (4G). Manufacturers such as samsung, huawei, oneplus and motorola have been offering 5G-capable smartphones for more than a year now. With the market launch of the iphone 12 last friday, which marks the beginning of the 5G era for apple, interest in 5G has once again risen significantly.
"With 5G, consumers are surfing the mobile network faster than ever before," said markus schramm, head of mobile communications at check24. "The new transmission standard has not yet arrived everywhere in germany, but recently there has been rough progress in network coverage."
Consumers who want to surf the 5G network need not only a 5G-capable device but also a contract that allows them to use the 5G network. According to check24, a powerful 5G-capable contract is available for as little as 20 euros per month on average. Alternatively, 5G entry for prepaid customers with telekom or vodafone is possible for around three euros a month via a paid 5G add-on option. However, many of the inexpensive contracts only have a comparatively small volume of a few gigabytes, which is quickly used up when transmitting at 5G speed.
